Who was Senzo Meyiwa
Senzo Robert Meyiwa was born at 24 September 1987 in South Africa.
In 2002 he joined the Orlando Pirates. He made his professional debut in 2005.
Meyiwa was going to play in the next Africa cup in 2015.
He played his last game at 25-10-14
His death
Meyiwa was shot after a men entered his girlfriend’s house. Police said two men had entered the house in Vosloorus, south of Johannesburg, at around 20:00h. They wanted money and valuable things. National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega told a press conference that Meyiwa was shot once in the upper body as he moved towards the door. The three men then fled on foot.
The goalkeeper’s friend Tumelo Waka Madlala, who was at the house during the robbery, said Meyiwa was shot while trying to stop the intruders. “As they were running away we tried to stop them and that is when they shot him” Madlala told the Associated Pres. When Meyiwa arrived at the hospital he was already dead . Police said there were seven people in the house during the attack.. Authorities said they would do everything possible to find the killers. Africa has a high rate of violent crime, but it was not immediately clear if the house where Meyiwa was staying was targeted by thieves or if it were people with other motives.
South African President Jacob Zuma said : “We mourn the death of this young footballer and team leader whose life has been taken away at the prime of his career. Words cannot express the nation’s shock at this loss.”
The police give a reward of nearly 153,000 rands (£8,700) for information leading to arrests in the case.
His team
National football team coach Ephraim Mashaba wiped away tears at a press conference in Johannesburg as he spoke about Meyiwa. “Most of the time, these things come when you least expect,” he said. “We’re going to miss Senzo a lot … never mind his saving goals.
rvin Khoza, chairman of Orlando Pirates, Meyiwa’s popular league club based in Soweto in Johannesburg, said the team were devastated by the killing. “We had a session in the morning with the players at which we were soul-searching. A lot of sobbing and crying. It was uncontrollable.”
A shock for all
His shooting brings into sharp focus on gun crimes in South Africa, particularly so soon after the trial of athlete Oscar Pistorius, who says he shot dead his girlfriend by mistake, fearing there was an intruder in the house.
South Africa is asking itself deep questions about the cancer of violence that has killed some of its best talent. The question in many people’s minds is: there is crime all over the world, but why is there so much violence in South-Africa?
Own opinion
I think it’s really sad that those things are happening right now in South Africa.
I hope that the Police will find the killers as soon as possible.
I also think it’s really sad for his relatives and team members. They’ve lost a really good player and a really good friend or son.
